Back Stock

Definition

Inventory that is held in a store’s backroom or storage area and not yet placed on the sales floor. Back stock is available to replenish shelves but is not visible or accessible to shoppers.

How It's Calculated

Example

A beverage brand identifies excessive back stock at several stores, where cases are stored in the backroom but not replenished to the shelf, contributing to out-of-stocks despite sufficient inventory on hand.
